Fall under its bewitching spell
The capital of Afro-Cuban culture and second-largest city in the country, Santiago de Cuba is a city that sizzles in the noonday sun and rocks into the wee hours of the morning.
Overview
Day and night, the distant rhythm resonating through the steep, winding streets of Santiago is an invitation to dance and a promise of discovery. Cultures intermingle here, creating an ethnic diversity unique in this country. Over the centuries, the Africans, the French, the Spanish, the Chinese and even the indigenous peoples have developed a culture that has influenced the rest of the island. The cradle of son, the rhythmic base of Cuban music, Santiago de Cuba is the most exotic yet also most typical of the country's major cities.
Santiago de Cuba, which has preserved better than anywhere else in Cuba the wrought-iron balconies and doors that are characteristic of colonial architecture, will enchant visitors who take the time to explore it. It features such must-see attractions as Parque Céspedes, dominated by one of the oldest cathedrals in the country, the Santa Iglesia Basílica and, on the east side of the square, the Casa Diego Vélazquez, a true masterpiece of colonial architecture that was built in 1515 for Diego Vélazquez and still stands today. The town's museums are also worth the detour: the Museo del Carnaval, the Museo Provincial Emilio Bacardí Moreau and the Museo de la Lucha Clandestina are wonderful places to learn more about the history of this fascinating town.
July 24, 25 and 26 are the most important days of Santiago's carnival, which honours Santiago Apóstol (St. James the Apostle). It is at this time of year that the town is most true to itself, when residents from all different neighbourhoods joyfully take to the streets of old Santiago.
Where on earth
Santiago de Cuba, capital of the province of Santiago, lies between the lofty mountains of the Sierra Maestra and the sea. Its geographical location on a large bay led to the rapid development of the city, which was at one time the country's capital.
