The First of the Americas
The first city founded in the Americas, Santo Domingo, has some 500 years of history under its belt. Despite the bustling pace of life here, Santo Domingo is a pleasant city, especially in the colonial zone.
Overview
The seat of the government of Spain's colonies in the New World, Santo Domingo thrived right from the start, as evidence by the numerous buildings dating from that period. Today, Santo Domingo is the biggest and most populated city in the Dominican Republic.
For those interested in old stonework, this is doubtless the most rewarding city in the country. A stroll through these streets is pleasant and requires little effort, the buildings all being set in a relatively limited perimeter. Visit the magnificent Catedral Santa María de la Encarnacíon, constructed during the 1540s, that dominates an entire side of the park. Calle Las Damas is like nothing else in Santo Domingo. This splendid little street, featuring some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the old city, will long be inscribed in your memory as one of the most remarkable discoveries of your trip.
Other buildings of interest lie outside the colonial zone. The Museo del Hombre Dominicano presents a rich collection of Taino art which provides insight into the religion and daily life of this society, which changed so radically following the arrival of the Europeans. In the Faro a Colón, a huge lighthouse, you can visit the mausoleum built for Columbus the famous explorer who discovered America. The Parque Nacional los Tres Ojos also merits a visit, with its pleasant trails, an open-air grotto and beautiful subterranean lakes.
Where on earth
Situated on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo has more than 300,000 inhabitants. The city developed along the shores of the Caribbean, and its port is the most frequented in the country.
